What can security insurance cover?

Common policy elements of security business insurance include:

  • Public liability insurance – or PL insurance as it’s also known, forms the basis of many security business insurance policies.  It protects you/your business should a member of the public be accidentally injured or their property damaged because of your work.  It’s especially important for businesses and security contractors whose work brings them into contact with the public, such as event supervisors, security guards, and security system installers
  • Employers’ liability insurance – or EL insurance, protects employers from compensation claims from their employees should they be sued for loss or injury at work.  If you have people working for you, be they full-time, part-time, or contracted, then having employers’ liability insurance cover is a legal requirement.  Failure to have a policy in place can lead to a £2,500 fine for each day you are without it.  In law, the health and safety of your employees is essential, which is why you are legally required to protect your business from incidents such as:
    • Someone having an accident at work
    • A member of staff developing a medical condition through their work
    • One of your employees having their property damaged at work

    Your policy must:

    • Cover you for at least £5 million of liability cover
    • Be through an authorised insurer
  • Product liability insurance – if a product you’ve recommended fails or causes damage, you can be sued for compensation, and this will cover you financially
  • Tools insurance – covering loss, theft, accidental or malicious damage, and some policies can also cover tools in transit, loss or theft of hired tools, and specialist tools such as a multimeter or a continuity tester
  • No subcontractors warranty – if there’s a problem with any of the works (including those supplied by a subcontractor), the client can bring a claim against you as the main contractor to seek redress and compensation for defective work.  So, if your business has a subcontractor install an alarm system and something goes wrong, you’ll be covered
  • Inefficacy insurance – also known as ‘failure to perform cover’ protects you financially should a product such as an alarm fail to work, or a guard fails to do their duty.  In the event of this happening, you’ll be protected from any compensation claims

  • Loss of keys – if you’re entrusted with a client’s keys and you lose them, loss of keys insurance will cover their replacement.  Should lost keys be used in a burglary, it could also cover the replacement of stolen items
  • Wrongful arrest insurance – an important cover for door supervisors, stewards and event security staff, it will cover legal fees, and compensation should someone sue you for wrongful arrest
  • Dog handlers’ insurance – if you’re using dogs for guarding, drug or explosives detection or crowd control, this will cover you if someone is accidentally injured or has their property damaged by your dog

Are there any policy options for security business insurance?

Yes, common ones include:

  • Commercial property insurance – if you own the building you operate from, then you’d be wise to have commercial property insurance in place, as it will cover accidental damage or even pay for the building to be rebuilt were it accidentally destroyed
  • Property away and in transit insurance – covers equipment such as computers, diagnostic and testing equipment, stock, tools and plant while it’s on any contract site in the UK or while in transit
  • Business interruption insurance – should your business be forced to close following a disaster such as flood or fire, business interruption insurance will provide you with an income until you can get back to normal trading
  • Terrorism insurance – covers you against losses or damage following an act of terrorism
  • Equipment breakdown insurance – if equipment at your premises breaks down, this will cover things like reconstitution of data costs and temporary hire of suitable items while things like computers are repaired or replaced

How much does security business insurance cost?

Your security insurance premiums will be calculated based on factors such as:

  • The level of cover you require
  • The type of work you are doing
  • The size of clients you are working with – installing burglar alarms for homeowners may be seen as less risky than installing security systems for a large commercial organisation
  • Whether you have any employees and if so, how many
  • What you need cover for – is it just public liability and inefficacy insurance or do you also need dog handlers insurance, for example
  • Your claims history
  • Where you work
  • The size of your business
